Port Commissioner Applauds Director’s Efforts

July 21, 2011

There was nothing about the extension of Highway 3132 on the Port Commission’s July 21 agenda; however, it did come up as an after note. At the end of the meeting long-time port commissioner James Pannell congratulated Eric England, executive director, on his efforts regarding 3132 saying, "It goes beyond the scope of your job responsibilities. And I believe we're close to a resolution." England thanked Pannell and agreed that they were close because of the "incredible, remarkable" grassroots campaign.

England indicated that they had a "very positive meeting” with Dr. Eric Kalivoda, deputy secretary of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, which centered around a financial plan as well as who was going to pay for 3132, sponsorships as well as operations and maintenance for the long term.

There is a question before the Port's bond council as to whether or not the Port can issue bonds for this project. England said, "We (Port) want to act as a facilitator or conduit, much the same way we have for other projects here at the Port." He cited the commission’s vote allocating bonds earlier in the meeting. England stated that the bond council believes it can issue bonds. "I haven't hit a brick wall or had a fatal flaw in my discussions," he said.
